Art Galleries
Art Galleries within East Gippsland are renowned for it's artisans, from painters to sculptors,
potters to silversmiths.
Choose to take an arts trail from Paynesville, and you will be rewarded with a selection
of studios and galleries displaying Local, Australian and International works. Of course, you
can visit on the galleries  en route to or from your Gippsland Lakes Escapes Lake Break.

Paynesville

Lake Gallery
Exhibiting some of the finest artworks from both local and renowned artists. The Lake Gallery is also a renowned Bed & Breakfast. The contemporary gallery is set on the shores
of the Gippsland Lakes, showing works of high quality with local, regional and Australian content. A leading gallery with a fantastic location 2a Backwater Court, Paynesville

Fishermans Wharf
Another absolute waterfront restaurant, with resident artist/owner Jan Franz’s work.
Jan is an excellent printmaker, and displays her work constantly, as well as having
intermittent exhibitions featuring other artists. Worth a look.

Regional Galleries
Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance Art Trail

East Gippsland Art Gallery
A small, publicly funded gallery housed near the old courthouse buildings. which has just recently been
renovated and refurbished. A small gallery shop is now in operation where you will be able to purchase
local crafts, and small artworks plus a selection of books.
Touring exhibitions and constantly changing local themes ensure that this a gallery not to be missed.

Krowathunkoolong, the Aboriginal Keeping Place I
This is the museum of Koorie history, heritage, culture and artifacts in Bairnsdale The
collection of art and artifacts is a good one and they are well displayed and explained,
often with a personal guide. There is a small shop attached, & is highly recommended.

JOLLY JUMBUK CRAFT CENTRE

Innovative in its origins in 1971, Jumbuk Wools is still a 100% Australian family-owned, vertically integrated industry, producing jumpers and hand-knitting yarn from only 100% pure new Australian fleece wool.

Green Gates Gallery 
Make sure you watch for the signs on the right hand side of the highway, on the Bairnsdale side of Nicholson. The gallery is housed in an old church, relocated from Bairnsdale. An eclectic mix of works
by local artists. Resident sculptor, Sharon Staughton displays her own work, which ranges from garden to indoor pieces. Other styles range from works on paper and canvas to ceramics, wood and jewelry.

Rosewood Pottery.
Swan Reach is on the Tambo River at the Princes Highway, about 15 minutes east of Bairnsdale
and just out of Lakes Entrance. Local hand thrown porcelain and stoneware using no moulds.

Metung
Turn off the Highway at Swan Reach and head down to Metung to continue the artists trail from Paynesville.

 

Studio 7-Owen and Lyn Piggott
The gallery displays the work of Owen who is a painter and printmaker of some note and his subject
matter is the Gippsland Lakes. Owens work is represented in major public and private collections in Australia and Overseas. Lyn, A silversmith has her handcrafted jewellery items also on display. Their studios are in the town of Metung and is signposted.

Max Nicolson
The studio and gallery that he sells from on Nungurner Rd. just a few km from Metung. Max takes his
inspiration from the lakes and produces oils, watercolours and drawings. Take the road from Metung back
to the highway and then turn right just outside the town proper. His gallery is signposted.

Nungurner
A small hamlet between Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance is home to three excellent galleries and four
very fine artists. These artists have their studios in a single location. Nungurner can be reached by
following the signs from Metung, after visiting the galleries there.The road from here will also take
you back to the Princes Hwy just out of Lakes Entrance.
Artists

  • Hendrik Forster and Kerryn Kirkby are very fine gold and silversmiths. Hendrik is influenced in
    his functional pieces by the spareness of design of the Bauhaus group. He has gained commissions
    worldwide. Kerryn produces beautiful, whimsical jewellery and her work is sold throughout the world.
  • Victor Greenaway is a gifted ceramic artist who produces functional and decorative pieces.
    He is represented in many private and public collections in Australia.
  • Tricia Allen is a talented glass artist also making functional and decorative pieces. She uses brilliant
    colours in her glassware and is represented in many collections.

Nyremilang
Is an old homestead close to Nungurner and well worth a visit. It was once
owned by the Syme family but is now open for visitors daily; usually 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. It has beautiful
views of the Lakes from the gardens.

Nowa Nowa
Just out of Lakes Entrance if you get this far is the beautiful township of Nowa Nowa
with a couple of galleries worth noting

Yelens Studio Gallery
Fine art by this international artist, in watercolors,oils,pastels and also sculpture.
The resident artist is Gary Yelen, and the gallery is situated 2km east of Nowa Nowa
Cofee and cake is also served.

Paynesville to Yarragon Art Trail
You can stop off and visit some of these places on your way up to the Lakes, just start
at Yarragon and move up the list.  Otherwise you could take a day trip to explore and
drive back via some of the interesting back roads that wind around the outskirts of the
highways and visit great little country towns like Heyfield and Maffra

Australian Wildlife Art Galleries
On the Highway is the studio and gallery of Chris and Dawn Stubbs, two artists who portray
Australian wildlife naturalistically and with great skill. Sculptures, paintings, prints and reproductions
are sold. The gallery also provides tea and coffee. The gallery also has a retail outlet in Bairnsdale
called the Silver Wombat. Between Bairnsdale & Stratford

The Gippsland Gallery
One of Victoria’s fine regional galleries, it is publicly funded and has a very good and
growing permanent collection as well as showing touring exhibitions of great merit. The
permanent collection has a core of fine works that have an environmental theme, or are
the work of local artists of great merit. It has a good gift shop too and the gallery is a
"must see" for any art lover visiting Gippsland. It is on the highway, well sign-posted at
the western end of town. Members of most Gallery Societies around Australia are entitled to free entry.

Cowwarr Art Space
This is a fine gallery between Traralgon and Sale to the north of the Highway, about 1 1/4 hours
from Paynesville. It will reward you if you wish to visit on your way to or from Melbourne. It is
housed in an old butter factory that provides a wonderful exhibition space, and shows mainstream
as well as "fringe" work. The director, Carolyn Crossley will be pleased to show you the gallery.

Latrobe Regional Gallery, Morwell
A very good regional gallery that is publicly funded and has good touring exhibitions as well as a
permanent collection.

Yarragon
Asmall town on the Princes Highway about 1 1/4 hours from Melbourne (about 2 hours from Paynesville).
There are galleries, antique and gift shops and several cafes to visit.
