Paynesville, Raymond Island and Surrounds

Bullumwaal Preserves   The cottage industry of Bullumwaal Preserves is set on about eight acres and gets its name from the township of Bullumwaal, situated in a small valley some 27 kilometres north of Bairnsdale. In the late 1800's, Bullumwaal was a thriving gold mining town, with a permanent population of about 1000 people and numerous businesses. As with many similar towns at the time, once the gold was exhausted, the population quickly diminished. Time and fires over the years have combined to reduce the township to just a few permanent buildings. Most of the fruit used in our products is grown here and all items are manufactured on site. We have a small mixed orchard and a covered area for the berries to protect them from the birds. Any fruit or vegetable that we don't grow, we obtain from local growers where possible. Our preserves are made in small batches, so that our product is as fresh as possible. We have local outlets in Bairnsdale as well as being at the Farmer's Markets.

Raymond Island Honey
The bees are busy on Raymond Island, and with all the superb gum trees and native flora, the outcome is a tasty honey that is marketed in great tubs.
You cannot leave the area without sampling some.

Local Lake Fish
You have not lived until you have tried some locally caught Lake fish. Paynesville Seafoods brothers have a unique set-up.
One runs the shop and the other catches the fish.
Catch can include varieties like local flathead, mullet, luderick and bream.
But if the prawn season is on, do not miss trying a local Lake Prawn.
The smaller variety is packed full of flavour, and they are cooked fresh at the shop

Potatoes
Follow Western Boulevard right down to the end and veer around the corner, and about 50 metres on the left you will find a street side stall with good, local potatoes for sale.
The honesty system is used here, take the potatoes and leave your money in the jar!

Great Local Fruit & Veg
Paynesville is lucky to have a great local Fruit and Veg shop, with local growers providing the business with some fresh and tasty treats.  Local avocadoes and tasty tomatoes are a big favourite.
Also sells fresh herbs and local free range eggs.

Meat Beat
Gippsland beef is renowned, and this is where to get it. Rod the butcher specialises in all meats though, and has great local producers. 
Try his own smoked meats for something special.  Winner at the Melbourne Royal Show 3 times in a row for his wonderful Ham.
Whether it is a great holiday BBQ or an intimate dinner for two in your holiday property, this is the place to stop for sensational taste treats.

There are many growers and producers who are happy to have a visit from you, to view their fields, paddocks or roadside stands.

Jenkins Fruit & Orchards - A fantastic spot to visit for really fresh fruit with real fruit flavour Bumberrah Road, Johsonville Open Nov-June, 7 days 8am-6pm
Tambo River Tomatoes - Old fashioned varieties grown, so the flavour tastes like REAL tomatoes. Grown all year round, this is a real treat. Open all year, 7 days 9-5pm
Ian & Jenny McConnells Berry Farm - Export quality berries are produced with high quality assurance program guidelines.  Raspberries, Blackberries and red currents Open Dec-Mar 10am -4pm
Nicholson River Winery - Fine quality wine producers - red, white and Gippsland Sparkling.  Nicholson River Chardonnay is a renowned drop, so drop in and sample it. Beautiful location amongst the vines. Open for tasting & sales  10am - 5pm weekends & holidays  10am-4pm most other days (phone if poss)
Sarsfield Estate - Wine sales by appointment, no tastings. If you are after an excellent Pinot then this is one to try.  Buy a bottle from Rod the Butcher in Paynesville, or from Jan& Fred at the IGA Paynesville or Maxene & Gary at the Payensville Foodworks.
